About this Homepage
The purpose of this homepage was to
- finally learn HTML and CSS
- create a fresh, good-looking but fast layout
- present myself
- give you some tips
- not to use dangerous and pointless things like Java, Java-Script, ActiveX and Flash
Therefore I have written it completely with Gvim and have not used any WYSIWYG-stuff. In order to check the layout I have used Firefox due to its rapidity. The graphics and screenshots have been made with the Gimp.
Dynamics
If you have ever created a website you may know the problem with the navigation. If you use a static one, you have to update it manually each time want to a new site. But it is the fastest way in the beginning.
Anyway, I learnt Perl, a script language, to manage this. The navigation bar on the left and the footer at the bottom are created that way and it does work like a charm. The Perl script modify the file within seconds and the output can modified in many ways.
CSS Support
The layout was completely made with CSS, that your browser must support. If it does not you get a broken layout. Thus, I recommend the upper ones.
Here, you can find a list that shows you the CSS support of all common browsers, the best one is at the top, the worst at the bottom. I disabled CSS for Netscape 4.x. due to the bugs.
- basing on
Gecko
Opera 5+ (Linux, Mac OS X & Windows)- basing on
KHTML
MS Internet Explorer 5+ (Mac OS X)
MS Internet Explorer 6+ (Windows)
MS Internet Explorer 5.x (Windows)
iCab (Mac OS X)
Using this browsers, you do not see any layout at all and get only the standard-layout of your browser. Nevertheless, you will get the same information:

[02-11-24] added a new program to my list: a signature generator, also changed the PDF & PS-reader.
[02-10-28] replaced gentoo as advice for file manager with the shell and mc.
[02-09-29] replaced Pan with Sylpheed as my advice for a news-client
[02-09-22] I have updated a lot of my screenshots in my Linux-section; I guess they are quite nice. Besides, some search engine have added me to the databases und now my sites are found with keywords like "Linux" or "PGP/MIME". My Linux sites seem to be that convincing that I've made some guys to switch to Linux.
[02-04-21] Welcome to my first homepage! I have worked for almost half a year, with several intermissions, and I hope you like the layout and will be able to gather some interesting information.
You can find information about computers in general but mostly Linux. I want to encourage you to try Linux and OpenOffice.org, the free office suite.
