Just for Fun!
Ego-Shooter Doom 3
In Doom 3 you are a soldier on a research station on mars in 2145. Because of several experiments a door to another dimension is opened. Daemons conquer the station and kill the crew and transmute some of them into zombies. As soldier you sneak through the mostly dark station and are surprisingly attacked by zombies and daemons. Soon you get used to hear your enemies and recognize them because of their shadows. Due to the very good graphics and the dark atmosphere, that is also supported by the sound, you get fascinated by this game.
Ego-Shooter Unreal Tournament 2004
Unreal Tournament 2004 is a ego-shooter with serveral gaming modes. There are the usual modes like Deathmatch but also new modes like Onslaught with the possibility of using verhicles and aircrafts. These have either a high fire power or a high velocity; depending on the situation within the game only few of them have advantages. Due to the well designed artificial intelligence of the bots this games is a lot of fun even without human gamers in the internet of the LAN.
Ego-Shooter Quake III
Quake III Arena is (still) one of the most popular ego-shooters of all. id Software has not only released a Windows version but also a Linux one with the same features. Many people say that their Quake under Linux is faster than the one under Windows and I myself can confirm it. You can frag your Windows friends in the internet and the LAN. Or you frag the bots with "nightmare"-skill;) Nevertheless, this game is not for free, you have to pay for it!
Realism-Shooter
Urbanterror is a MOD of Quake III Arena and so it is quite fast. You can fight against bots or real people using realistic pistols, guns, rocket launchers and grenades. When you are hit you lose blood, hobble and wheeze. If you reload your weapon you lose the catridges of the old magazine. Thus, it is very realistic!
Car Simulation
Racer is a simulation that aims to use real physics and therefore the control is not as easy as e.g. in "Need for Speed". You can enable and disable safety features like ABS or TC during the simulation. Moreover, you can log the telemetric data like position, velocity and acceleration in order to analyse them later. You can adjust several paramter like the earth acceleration.
The default control is the mouse, but you can also use the keyboard or keypad. A network feature is implemented but there are also cars that are controlled by the computer. A lot of cars, as well as a Windows and Mac OS X version are also available.
Flight Simulation
If you want to stay on good old earth, try Flightgear. Its interface seems to be very realistic but I can only state this as my impression, since I have never steered a plane. At first my plane always crashed, but after some crashes I could control it and I can even land on mountains;) Flightgear knows the airport names and simulates the local time: My screenshot was taken at sunrise.
Racing Game
Tuxracer is a very cool game just to have fun for a few minutes: You play the part of a penguin that slithers down a mountain on a snowy and icy surface. Your task is to collect as many herring (mhhhh;) as possible and to be as fast as possible. On the homepage there are a lot of other tracks. My sister does not like those 3D-games at all since she normally gets sick but she really likes this games.
